Title | Cushing, David Henry: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 1971 |
Description | Citation handwritten |
Citation | Distinguished for his series of well connected studies on oceanic and fisheries biology. After early critical work on the vertical migrations of zooplankton, he has played a leading part in developing echo-sounder surveys of fish populations. His original contributions have come from observations, experiments and theoretical studies on the population dynamics and productivity of plankton and fishes. Whether concerned with aspects such as, phytoplankton productivity, the grazing of copepods, the spawning times of fishes and marine production cycles, biological and hydrographical changes in British waters over the past 30 years, or oceanic upwelling and the production of fishes, he has grasped the problems involved and devised theoretical and practical means towards their resolution. More than anyone, he has been bold - and stimulating to others - in his endeavour to comprehend the entire production cycle from nutrients to fishes. |
