TitleSpinks, Alfred: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1976
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationMain Board Director of Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd., responsible for Research and Development throughout the Company. Distinguished particularly for services to biochemistry and pharmacology, both as practitioner and manager, and more recently (since 1972) responsible for the overall strategy of ICI's Research and Development world-wide. A graduate and postgraduate (Imperial College, London) chemist, and a graduate in physiology (University of Oxford), he was among the earliest to apply chemical skills to the study of drug absorption, distribution and metabolism in animals. His work in 1945, which preceded the introduction of the novel antimalarial proguanil, was a model for future drug innovation. In later years, he has always put his expert knowledge of drug and toxicity evaluation freely at the service of other scientists. He became Research Director of the Pharmaceuticals Division in 1966 and now, in addition to his responsibility for research in ICI as a whole, he is concerned with the Company's relationship with Universities and with recruiting policy; and with Plant Protection Limited and Pharmaceutical business throughout the world.
