| Citation | His early work on wound healing in the cornea showed the value of large doses of ascorbic acid in the treatment of deep corneal ulceration. He later established the importance of oxygen in the normal development of the retinal circulation. He has developed electro-optical methods for studying in man the bleaching of visual purple, the dynamics of the accommodation reflex and the quality of the image formed on the retina. These three techniques are now employed in research in many parts of the world, where his original work is quoted and extended. Recently he and his co-workers have discovered close correspondence between sensory judgements and evoked brain potentials. These point strongly to the presence of specific and individually fatiguable paths which encode special features in observed patterns, e.g. the direction of lines and their spatial frequency. Records from single nerve fibres (cat and monkey) confirm this analysis. |
