Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Professor Gibson has had three main periods of research. In these he worked in three related but different fields, firstly at Birmingham University on luminescence in solids (1944-1948), secondly at R.R.E. Malvern on semiconductor physics and electronic devices based on semiconductors (1948-62) and thirdly at Essex University on lasers and laser physics. In all three fields he has made distinctive contributions. His work on semiconductors won him international recognition as one of the outstanding and original contributors in this rapidly growing field - both in the basic physics and in device development. In his more recent work he has made substantial contributions to laser technology. His photon-drag detector is used in every laboratory where work on very short infra-red pulses is carried out and is an outstanding example of ingenious application of basic physics to device development. His accurate measurement of two-photon absorption of intense laser radiation in semiconductors has given the first credible values for the magnitude of the effect - all previous values being wrong. His work on stabilisation of CO-2 lasers has added greatly to their use as pump sources in conjunction with tunable lasers. He has also contributed to the planning of the SRC high-power laser project. In all his work he has shown a high degree of experimental skill coupled with exceptional ingenuity and a deep understanding of the basic physics.
