| Citation | The candidate has distinguished himself in the study in the human of transport mechanisms for small molecules across biological barriers such as intestinal mucous membrane and renal tubular cells. He has stressed the importance of non-ionic diffusion in the cases of weak acids and bases, showing that excretion rates, and therefore therapeutic requirements, of certain drugs varied greatly with urine pH. His later discovery of the grossly abnormal amino acid absorption from the gut in Hartnup disease and in cystinuria led to the further discovery that absorption of amino acids as peptides played a life-saving role in these diseases and was also important in the nutrition of normal subjects. In consequence the whole problem of amino acid requirement in man needs reassessment. |
