| Citation | Distinguished for 25 years for his monumental studies of the structure, ultrastructure and interconnexions of the brains of vertebrates, he is the undisputed leader in his field in this country and has wide international recognition. His strength is his ability to combine demanding techniques - high precision brain surgery, serial reconstructions of lesions and the use of a variety of histochemical techniques carried out in parallel with electron microscopical analysis, all fraught with pitfalls at every stage and requiring exhaustive and skilful interpretation. There are few people who can compete with Powell in this sort of research. His earlier work includes fundamental studies on the organisation of the hypothalamus, hippocampus, amygdala, septal nuclei and thalamus. More recently he has elucidated the visual and olfactory systems. Especially outstanding are his recent studies of the cerebral cortex of Primates, which are helping to lay the foundations of an analytical approach to the structure and microphysiology of its various cytoarchitectonic areas. |
