Citation | Ramsay is internationally known for his contributions to molecular spectroscopy and molecular structure. His two most outstanding accomplishments, known to every spectroscopist, have been: (1) the discovery and subsequent analysis of the spectrum and the structure of the NH-2 free radical, and (2) his demonstration that the ground state of the C-2 molecule is not the 3-pi-u lower state of the Swan bands but the 1-sum-g-+ lower state of the Phillips and of the Mulliken bands which lies slightly below that of the 3 -pi-u state. Ramsay's early recognition of the importance of what is now known as Renner-Teller interaction for the understanding of electronic spectra of polyatomic molecules has had a profound influence on the development of the subject. Further basic contributions by Ramsay are, among many others, his discovery and analysis of the spectrum of the HCO free radical and his extensive analysis of the spectrum of glyoxal (HCO)-2. |
