Title | Scott, Alastair Ian: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 1976 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his imaginative and wide-ranging contributions to the synthesis and biosynthesis of natural products. His application of phenol oxidation to the synthesis of griseofulvin and the tetracycline nucleus was an early demonstration of his talents. He has made contributions to the enzymology and in vitro stimulation of polyketide biosynthesis. One of his most fruitful themes has been concerned with the biosynthesis and structural interconnections of the complex indole alkaloid families. In this field he has made fundamental contributions to biosynthesis, enzymology and biogenetically inspired synthesis, delineating several intermediates and determining the absolute stereochemistry of the methyl group insertion process leading to the corrin structure. His early work on structure and stereochemistry in the terpene field laid the foundation for his work on electronic spectra and chiroptical properties and he has made a number of valuable contributions in these areas. He has received the Corday-Morgan Medal of the Chemical Society and the Ernest Guenther Award of the American Chemical Society and is in frequent demand as a lecturer and symposium speaker. Copies of 125 papers are appended. |
