| Citation | The most distinguished living and working representative of the "Delft School" of microbiology. He has made a number of major contributions to the subject. He elucidated the network of converging metabolic pathways by which aromatic compounds are degraded in Pseudomonads. He demonstrated the metabolic versatility of these organisms and discovered sequential induction of enzymes as a regulation mechanism. He has done a great deal to clarify the biochemistry and physiology of the blue-green algae and he has rationalized the taxonomy of the Pseudomonads by an application of modern biochemistry. In addition, he has made interesting observations on a variety of other species, e.g. stalked bacteria. Finally, directly through his collaborators and pupils, and indirectly through his classical textbook, he has significantly influenced the development of the subject. |
