TitleSteele, John Hyslop: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1972
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his studies on marine production. He has designed mathematical models for prediction of primary production in non steady state conditions which illustrate the relationships between light, chlorophyll content, nutrient levels and the influence of vertical mixing. Initially based on original observations in the North Sea, his ideas have been applied to open waters under tropical and subtropical conditions. More recently, he has been responsible for an intensive study of the trophodynamics of sand beaches. With his collaborators he has successfully identified and quantified the energy relationships of the microflora, meiofauna and macrofauna of this type of ecosystem in temperate and tropical latitudes.
His approach to complex biological relationships is marked by an exceptional ability to translate intuitive arguments into formal relationships which can be tested by observation and experiment.
