Title | Bishop, Richard Evelyn Donohue: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 1973 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Bishop has been a leading figure in the field of engineering vibrations for a great many years and has made major contributions in research, in this and related subjects. One of his most important research topics has been rotor dynamics where he developed the modal approach to the motion of flexible shafts, a method that is now very widely used in industry internationally. The method removed a barrier to the limit of size of turbo generators. He has advised industry widely in this important field. Bishop has also made major contributions to vibration analysis, railway dynamics and the mechanics of marine craft and is breaking new ground in our understanding of the dynamical behaviour of ships in a seaway. |
