Citation | Professor Bradley has made outstanding contributions to our knowledge of metal alkoxide and metal alkylamido complexes. His early researches allowed an understanding of the oligomeric nature of metal alkoxides in terms of the preferred co-ordination numbers and stereochemistry of the metal atoms involved. Subsequently he was the first person to identify the novel properties of transition metal dialkylamides [M(NR2)x], by characterising monomeric covalent compounds such as [Ta(NR)(NR2)6], [W(Nme2)6], and triply metal-metal bonded dimmers [M2(NR2)6] (M = Mo or W). The high reactivity of the metal-nitrogen bonds in these complexes has led Bradley to employ these compounds in novel syntheses. Use of the very bulky diisopropylamido ligand yielded the first authentic 3-co-ordinated chromium (III) compound [Cr(Npri2)3]. This significant breakthrough into the low co-ordination field has been exploited primarily with the very bulky bis-trimethylsilylamido ligand N(SiMe3)2 either alone as in [M{N(SiMe3)2}3] (M = Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Fe, Y, La, Ce, etc.), or in conjunction with other ligands as in [Cr(NO){N(SiMe3)2}3], [Cr{N(SiMe3)2}2(THF)2], [Mn{N(SiMe3)2}(THF)], or [Co{N(SiMe3)2}2{P(C6H5)3}]. |
