Citation | Brooksby opted for research in physiology, but because of war-time restrictions soon found himself at Pirbright where he developed the serological procedures universally adopted in foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) diagnosis; he identified 4 of the 7 types of FMD virus. Other research was on antigenic components, virus survival, development and testing overseas of live virus vaccines. Since 1964 on becoming Director at Pirbright, Brooksby has supervised research on all the animal virus diseases exotic to the UK. The UK has been free of FMD since 1968, Pirbright's research contributing much to this success. During the last 15 years he has advised many developing countries on disease control. UK recognition put him on the Williams Committee and on GMAG. He has put management and advisory activities before personal research and on general rather than on specific grounds he |
