Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to the theory of nuclear structure. He made some of the early calculations on the detailed structure of light nuclei showing the important role played by tensor and spin-orbit forces. With collaborators, he wrote the classic, and much referred to, shell model papers which accounted for energy levels, electromagnetic moments and transition rates in nuclei around 16O and which gave the first detailed account of particle-hole states, the giant dipole resonance and spurious states. His next contributions were extremely important and established the relationship between collective rotational states in nuclei and the SU3 classification of shell model states; this pioneering work has been used extensively by many researchers. More recently he has initiated and carried through a large programme of work in which nuclear structure calculations are carried out directly in terms of measured nucleon-nucleon phase shifts. |
