Title | Jack, Kenneth Henderson: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 1977 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to crystal chemistry and the preparation of new materials at high temperatures, particularly nitrogen containing ferrous alloys, ceramics and glasses. His early work disclosed the existence of iron carbonitrides, explained phase transformations in both carbon and nitrogen steels and led him, later, to a strengthening mechanism in metals. While Director of Research at Thermal Syndicate he led the team which produced the first vitreous silica of necessary purity for the production of transistor grade silicon and also the first U.K. production of ruby for lasers. Recently he predicted on thermo dynamic and structural grounds new ceramic materials which he then prepared and characterised. These are the Sialons, (phases in the Si-Al-O-N and related systems) allied to the silicates in consisting of tetrahedral of (Si Al)(O N)4. Some of these materials have high strength, oxidation resistance, and low thermal expansion coefficients. They have aroused great interest in the U.K., U.S.A., Germany and Japan where Jack is recognised as a pioneer in this field. |
