Date | 1977 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his outstanding contribution to the discovery and production of oil in many parts of the world, especially Alaska and the North Sea. Following some years in the BP research department studying reservoir and production problems in Iran and elsewhere, in 1966 he was made General Manager, Exploration Department, London. In this capacity he carried responsibility for delimiting and developing what was subsequently the very large Prudhoe Bay oilfield in Alaska, and had final responsibility for directing the drilling and development of the major Forties oilfield in the North Sea. His determined and inspiring technological leadership, latterly as Deputy Chairman of BP, has resulted in the successful exploitation of these energy resources, with massive benefit to the UK economy. His record of achievement in the application of science and technology has led to his involvement in national policy formation through his membership of the Offshore Technology Board, the Advisory Council on Research and Development for Fuel and Power, the Advisory Council for Applied Research and Development and his Chairmanship since 1974 of the Council of the Welding Institute. |
