| Citation | Distinguished for his studies of the biology, distribution and systematics of squid. By investigation of the beaks of squid found in the stomachs of their predators, he has shown that many squid rarely caught in nets are among the commonest large animals found in the sea. He used his knowledge of the species found in the stomachs to trace the migrations of whales. He has studied the use of large concentrations of ammonium ions and of special oils of buoyancy in squids and developed a theory of the use by sperm whales of temperature changes in the spermaceti in the head to control buoyancy when diving. Recently by working on the statoliths of modern and fossil animals he has made considerable progress in unravelling the evolutionary history of modern soft-bodied cephalopods. He has also made outstanding contributions to the design and operation of nets for the precise sampling of oceanic animals. |
