Date | 1979 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his part in the development of plastic theory as a basis for the design of steel structures, made extensive studies of elastic plastic instability, sggested an applied design procedures, was the first to recognise the phenomenon of incremental collapse and to examine the significance of shakedown. He investigated the behaviour of box girders and collaborated in deriving design rules for the Merrison Committee. Horne has also investigated the behaviour of thin walled members, corrugated sheets, shells under external pressure and the setting of radio telescopes for optimum performance. He contributed to the theoretical basis of the mechanics of cohesionless soils. He has recently returned to the application of probability theory to structural safety. |
