| Citation | Distinguished for his work on the afferent innervation of the heart and lungs. He correctly identified atrial B fibres shortly after finishing his Ph.D., worked out the properties of atrial A and B fibres and of ventricular fibres, and has added to our knowledge of aortic and carotid chemoreceptors. His most important work has been the identification of J-receptors in the lung and their reflex effects. There is now a rapidly growing body of evidence that a number of pathological lung conditions increase breathing through their effect on J-receptors. |
