CitationChilver, Amos Henry (Cranfield) b. 30.10.1926, Kt. Bach., M.A., D.Sc., Hon. Fellow, Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. Vice-Chancellor, Cranfield Institute of Technology. Distinguished for his many contributions to the theory of structural stability, including the post-buckling behaviour of structures, and to applications of the theory to the design of cooling towers and other thin-walled structures. Since 1970, he has led the development of Cranfield as a centre of applied research and advanced teaching in an expanding range of modern technologies, and has contributed notably to the education and training of engineers and the study of environmental problems. He is a director of some major engineering firms and temporary Chairman of the Post Office for its reorganisation.
