Title | Ottewill, Ronald Harry: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 1977 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Ottewill is distinguished for his contributions to the science of colloidal dispersions. His early work on the silver halides, to which much attention had been given by the Dutch school, underlined the inadequacies of these systems for testing qualitatively the rapidly growing theory of the subject. As a consequence, Ottewill and his colleagues developed techniques for preparing polymer lattices of spherical shape and with a high degree of monodispersity, the surface charge of which could be predetermined as anionic, cationic or zwitterionic. Using these systems, Ottewill has carried out a long series of elegant experiments which have greatly advanced out understanding of colloidal stability. Of particular importance has been his lead in the study of "steric" stabilization arising from the adsorption of macromolecules. |
