He has done important work on K-theory and its relation to the index of elliptic operators, classifying spaces of categories and infinite loop spaces, Gel'fand-Fuks cohomology applied to foliations, and configuration spaces from the point of view of homotopy theory. All his papers are of the highest quality and are characterized by penetrating insight and lucid exposition.
