Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Manager of Biosciences Division and Member of the Executive Committee, Unilever Research, Colworth Laboratory. Distinguished for his contributions to biochemical methodology, to the biosynthesis and metabolism of fatty acids particularly in plants, and for his leadership in modern industry. With A.J.P. Martin, James developed the gas-liquid chromatogram, an instrument which has had a profound effect on the development of modern chromatography, and also detectors for liquid chromatography. His contribution to the field of fatty acid biochemistry has been sustained over a number of years and amongst many notable contributions the elucidation of the mechanism and stereochemistry of formation of long chain unsaturated acids in plants and mammalian systems and the role of acyl lipids in the biosynthesis of polyunsaturated acids are outstanding. He has been largely responsible for two major biotechnology processes now in commercial operation. Over many years he has made sustained contributions to the work of the Research Councils, both in general affairs and in bringing an industrial perspective to bear on scientific policy making. |
