Title | Polge, Ernest John Christopher: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 1978 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his pioneering contributions to the artificial control of animal breeding. His work in the 1950's in developing techniques for deep freezing semen had an immense influence of Artificial Insemination practice throughout the world. He has made extensive observations on the reproductive physiology of pigs including fertilization, embryonic development and the effects of gonadotropic and steroid hormones on fertility and ovum transport in the female tract. From these studies he evolved methods for synchronisation of oestrus, and the recovery and transplantation of eggs or embyos in pigs. He has played an important part in the successful recovery, preservation and transfer of embryos in cattle and sheep. |
