TitleWestcott, John Hugh: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1976
DescriptionCitation handwritten
CitationFor a quarter of a century Westcott has been looked upon internationally as one of the leading contributors to Control Theory. With Tustin he played a leading part in the first internal conference on Control at Cranfield in 1951 and also at the second in Heidelberg in 1956. He has made many original contributions to Control Theory and Systems Analysis and his published work has been so highly thought of that he was elected chairman of the IFAC Theory Committee a position previously held by only the most outstanding control theorists from the USA and USSR. He became Reader and Head of the Automatic Control Section at Imperial College in 1956, Professor of Control Systems in 1961, Head of the Control Systems Section of the Centre for Computing and Automation in 1965 and the first head of the Department of Computing and Control when it was formed in 1970. For the past 10 years or more he has led one of the largest and most successful teams applying computing and control to large and complex industrial processes.
