| Citation | Distinguished for his many successful commercial applications of his scientific and engineering discoveries. Thus, he was one of the pioneers in gas liquid chromatography being particularly associated with the practical realisation of capillary column chromatography, for which he received the Tswett Medal for Chromatography in 1974 (USA) and 1978 (USSR).
His work in combustion science and engineering, in which he applied the Coanda effect (from the field of gas dynamics) to the successful design of novel oil field gas flaring systems (INDAIR, MARDAIR, STEDAIR) has led to the generation of worldwide gross activity of £120m with savings in the North Sea of ca £100m. He received the MacRobert Award for this work in 1982. Also in the field of combustion he has designed a new honeycomb burner, the MATRIX burner, of much improved overall efficiency. He received the Royal Society of Chemistry Award for Combustion Chemistry in 1982.
In the field of oil pollution control and disposal he introduced a new approach in 1967 - involving the use of flexible floating booms combined with novel mechanical skimmers. This culminated in the creation of a successful company 'Vikoma' which has produced a £10m exploitation to date.
Latterly, a new light weight high strength geodesic plastic based structure MATHWEB has been brought to commercial exploitation in less than 5 years. This was developed from a collaboration with Mr. C. Math. |
