Title | Hondros, Ernest Demetrios: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 1980 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Hondros pioneered the accurate experimental measurement of the thermodynamic properties of surface and grain boundaries in metals, alloys and ceramics. He was one of the first to measure the absolute surface free energies of metals and the anisotropy of the surface energy. Using absolute surface free energy measurements and Auger electron microscopy, he has demonstrated that grain boundary segregation can be explained in terms of classical surface energy concepts (Gibbs, Langmuir, B.E.T.) with appropriate modern modifications and modification for the solid state. He has introduced many important ideas to show how interfacial micro-chemistry in multi-component systems governs low temperature inter-granular fracture, creep fracture, surface oxidation, inter-granular stress corrosion and more recently joining technology showing how this approach can be applied to important alloy design. He is a Rosenhain medallist of the Metals Society and has won the H M Howe Medal of the American Society of Metals. |
