| Title | Roberts, Sir Gareth Gwyn: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
| Date | 1982 |
| Description | Citation typed |
| Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to semiconductor device physics, and in particular for his studies of the device potential of organic materials. After early studies of conduction in a variety of relatively unknown semiconductors, and of the electronic properties of semi-insulators, Roberts developed an interest in molecular electronics. He was the first scientist to appreciate the versatility of Langmuir-Blodgett films, a topic which had been dormant for many years. He personally designed a new form of Langmuir trough which has opened the field to many research workers. He has demonstrated that a series of electronic and optical devices can show improved performance by the incorporation of L-B films, and his example has stimulated others to invent further devices. |
