Citation | O. Siddiqi has contributed substantially to two fields of genetics: microbial and neurophysiological. Working with Aspergillus he provided evidence as early as 1961 of polarized intragenic recombination. Working with Escherichia coli he discovered - with A. Garen - the occurrence of suppressors of "nonsense" mutations, now in general use in molecular biology. He also demonstrated that recombinant molecules, incorporating segments of pre-existing DNA, do arise. After working with S. Benzer on the application of genetic tools to the dissection of neurophysiological processes in Drosophila, he introduced this approach into chemosensory perception (taste and smell). By the use of mutants blocking the activity of chemoreceptors or interfering with the development of the chemosensory network, Siddiqi is now expanding this new promising field. |
