Citation | Distinguished for her elegant studies of the cell physiology of early development, especially of the amphibian nervous system. Warner was one of the first to apply electrophysiological techniques to developmental problems and has made notable contributions in a number of areas including an important analysis of the role of gap junctions. In this study she combined mapping of cell-to-cell coupling with an analysis of the permeability properties of the junctions, revealing subtle differences at different developmental stages. She was also the first to demonstrate complete block of junctional permeability following acidification of the cytosol. Current work involves the use of antibodies to the junctional complex in order to probe further the part played by the gap junction in early development. Warner has, in addition, demonstrated a central role for the sodium pump both in the formation of the blastocoel and in the differentiation of neurones and with O.F. Hutter, is responsible for a quantitative analysis of the chloride conductance of skeletal muscle. |
