Citation | Burnstock has made major contributions to knowledge of the structure, function and pharmacology of the autonomic nervous system, including changes that occur during development and disease. In particular he pioneered the adaptation of the 'sucrose gap technique' to study membrane potential changes in smooth muscle, and (with Holman) was the first to record junction potentials at sympathetic neuromuscular junctions. He developed culture preparations which provide new mammalian models for studies of complex nervous networks and long term nerve-muscle interactions. He established the existence of non-adrenergic, non-cholinergic nerves supplying visceral and cardiovascular systems, and proposed that some of these nerves utilized ATP as the transmitter. He distinguished two types of purinergic receptors (P1- and P2-purinoceptors), and has presented evidence for ATP as a cotransmitter with noradrenaline in some sympathetic nerves. |
