Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Chapman has worked in the field of biomembrane studies. On the basis of physical studies of pure phospholipids using various techniques, e.g. i.e. spectroscopy, scanning calorimetry and n.m.r. spectroscopy, he put forward the concept of biomembrane fluidity and its modulation by cholesterol, metal ions and proteins. These physical techniques were also applied for the first time to natural biomembranes. He also showed the importance of phase transitions of phospholipids in monolayer, bilayer and bulk systems pointing to the importance of these for understanding biomembrane structure and function. These concepts are generally accepted and emphasise the modern dynamic view of biomembranes. Recently he introduced a novel technique using homogeneous catalysts for manipulating lipid and biomembrane fluidity. |
