Citation | E.W.J. Mitchell has contributed to solid state physics through a wide range of experiments, technically ingenious and relevant to problems of theoretical importance. His short paper on the Faraday effect provided a method for determining the effective mass of carriers in semi-conductors. His main interest has been directed towards the understanding of defects in crystals and disorder generally. This work has included many optical studies, notably in diamond. He has also pioneered the use of neutrons for diffuse scattering: more recent work has dealt with gallium arsenide and especially molten salts. He has extended the use of isotopic substitution to the study of inelastic scattering from molten salts and has clearly identified optic-like modes in the molten state. He has played a leading role in the provision of high flux neutron beam facilities for British scientists. |
