Title | Mackintosh, Allan Roy: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 1984 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his studies of magnetism in a wide variety of materials with a wide variety of techniques. His early work on the electronic structure of metals using magneto-acoustic and magneto-resistance techniques, ultrasonic attenuation and positron annihilation led to significant advances in the establishment of Fermi surfaces. Later, he carried through successfully a notable series of experiments using inelastic neutron scattering, exploiting to the full the facilities available at the Danish reactor at Riso. In particular, his studies of the light rare-earth metals (cerium to europium) have played a major role in elucidating their complex magnetic properties, and he is rightly regarded as the leading expert on the physical properties of the lanthanide metals. Mackintosh was Director of the Danish Research Establishment at Riso 1971-76, is a Fellow of the Royal Danish Academy, and was President of the European Physical Society 1980-82. |
