TitleReynolds, Edward Osmund Royle: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1988
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationProfessor Reynolds is distinguished for his outstanding research into the scientific clinical management of premature and ill new-born babies. His application of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMRS or MRS) to this problem is especially noteworthy. In active multidisciplinary co-operation with numerous colleagues he has applied physico-chemical techniques to measure important physiological quantities in very small babies. Since 1960 his novel uses of blood-gas analysis have led to important discoveries about the mechanisms of pulmonary illnesses, such as bronchiolitis and hyaline membrane disease. He devised a rational basis for mechanical ventilation which, as shown by extensive follow-up study, has increased survival with normal development in premature and other ill infants. In 1978 he pioneered ultrasonic brain-scanning for the diagnosis of cerebral haemorrhage. Professor Reynolds quickly seized the unique opportunity offered by 31-P MRS for non-invasive measurement of key metabolites such as ATP, phosphocreatine and inorganic phosphate. In 1982 he led the team that obtained the first-ever MR spectra from human brain; they have turned out to be of great diagnostic and prognostic importance. More recently he has added a complementary technique, near infra-red spectroscopy, to investigate further the mechanism of, and how to prevent, brain injury in babies.
