Citation | Distinguished for his research into the immunology and epidemiology of helminth parasites of humans, particularly the schistosome flukes. By elegant laboratory experiments and long-term field studies of schistosome infection in human communities, he has determined the relative contributions of immunological and exposure factores to thre development of acquired immunity in man and demonstrated the slow build up of immunity with age and hence duration of exposure. His long-term field studies, combined with immunological and molecular work in the laboratory, has elucidated the role of eosinophils in killing invading parasites and the importance of 'blocking' antibodies in the slow build up of acquired immunity. His research elegantly combines field study and laboratory immunological and molecular research. |
