Citation | Greenland, Dennis James (Reading) b 13.6.1930, M.A., D.Phil., Oxford. Distinguished for studies of the surface properties of clays and their physical and chemical modification by organic matter in both temperate and tropical soils. His work in Australia and in Britain established a quantitave framework for carbon and nitrogen changes which he applied successfully to tropical soils. His pioneering work with P. H. Nye on the nutrient cycles of shifting cultivation resulted in a monogrph in 1960 which is still widely quoted. Greenland returned to the tropics to direct the research of two major International Agricultural Research Institutes. His research strategy for the IITA in Nigeria is still followed. At IRRI he applied his research on the structure of clays to the management of alternating rainfed and flooded crops. His work on nitrogen in tropical farming systems has increased productivity and reduced pollution. Greenland has published an effective series of papers which have made an outstanding contribution to the understanding and management of tropical agriculture. |
