| Citation | Distinguished for his many contributions to reproductive and developmental biology. He discovered luteolytic and anti-luteolytic factors and their role in cyclic and pregnant sheep. He devised culture systems for ovarian follicles, showed the steroidogenic capacity of different follicular cells and how to reverse follicular atresia. He established the vital importance of signal peptides in the maturation of oocytes and revealed the extensive network of intercellular junctions permitting transport between oocyte and follicular cells. The obligatory translational and transcriptional events for oocyte fertilizability were elucidated. From these molecular studies Moor was able to develop culture systems for salvaging immature oocytes from slaughterhouse ovaries, growing them for in vitro fertilization, and for onward culture of blastocysts for embryo transfer to surrogate mothers. He is now developing successful techniques for transgenesis, nuclear transfer and stem cell production in domestic mammals. |
