Citation | D C Robinson is distinguished for his experimental and theoretical contributions to the confinement of high temperature plasma by toroidal electric discharges. He showed experimentally and theoretically the key factors determining stability and confinement in the discharge of the Zeta type. He pioneered the use of laser light scattering in toroidal discharges, and in a joint experiment with UK and Russian colleagues obtained the first direct measurements of temperature exceeding 10x7 MK in Tokamaks. He was the first to show that tokamaks could be stable on ideal MHD theory. He has carried out key observations on JET. He has developed microwave current drive for tokamak discharges As division head for Tokamak experiments he is a very active researcher with a worldwide reputation in nuclear fusion. He is building new experimental apparatus and is secretaryof the JET Scientific Council. |
