| Citation | Tooze has made a series of significant contributions to our understanding of the exocytic and endocytic pathways in neuroendocrine and exocrine cells and the exploitation of these pathways by enveloped animal viruses. More recently he has provided the first evidence that endocytic membranes are utilised in the morphogenesis of vaccinia and human cytomegalovirus. While making his important scientific contributions Tooze has, for the last twenty years been Executive Secretary of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) and Secretary of the European Molecular Biology Conference (EMBC). Tooze, more than anyone else has been responsible for building EMBO into an organization with a vital role in the development of European molecular biology. From small beginnings, EMBO has become a commanding influence on European biology, largely thanks to his vision and abilities. Programmes of meetings, courses and workshops have fostered European exchange together with fellowship programmes that have expanded three-fold under Tooze's stewardship. In 1982, he founded the EMBO Journal and it is now one of the top four journals (including Nature and Science) in the world. Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of his work is that his numerous accomplishments have entailed an absolute minimum of administrative overhead, precluding the growth of an EMBO bureaucracy. His insistence on the rigourous application of unbiased peer review has made EMBO universally trusted and respected. As a recognition of his services, in 1986 he was the first recipient of the EMBO Medal. Nobody has done more to further the cause of modern biology in Europe than Tooze. |
