Citation | Dixon-Lewis's name is a byword for state-of-the-art studies of flames, whether experimental or computational. He has pioneered the numerical calculation of flame properties, building carefully on sound foundations. Beginning with laminar flames in the oxygen-hydrogen system, he incorporated rigorous treatments of molecular diffusion and conduction, and developed a kinetic model that began simply and added additional kinetic steps as necessary, not the other way round. He had earlier made outstanding experimental studies of temperature and species 'profiles' and characterized flames near their limits of flammability. In recent years he has moved on to large reaction mechanisms and used his results not only for ideal flames but for input into many important technical problems such as spark ignition, strained flames, and coal combustion. Spectacularly productive he was awarded both the Egerton Gold Medal and the Silver Medal of the Combustion Institute in 1990, and the Combustion Award of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 1994. |
