Citation | Ian Mills is outstanding for his experimental observation and theoretical analysis of high resolution rotation, vibration-rotation and electronic-vibration-rotation spectra of small molecules in the gas phases, with emphasis on the determination of molecule potential energy surfaces and dipole moment functions. In particular he has developed least squares refinement schemes to obtain harmonic and anhormonic force constants, through perturbation theory and variation theory, which have led to anharmonic force fields for a number of important molecules including H2O, HCN, C2H2 and HCCF. He has also contributed greatly to science through his definitive volume 'Quantities, Units and Symbols in Physical Chemistry'. |
