DescriptionCitation typed
CitationProfessor Brian Worthington is distinguished by his seminal works on the clinical evaluation of magnetic resonance imaging in the mid 70's. He was the first to describe the clinical applications of MRI by perforning the image interpretation for the first series of clinical cases published in 1980. His series of 8 papers published in 1983 in the American Journal of Neuroradiology were landmarks and also predicted future applications of MRI in the central nervous system. He also drew attention to the value of MRI in musculoskeletal radiology. His paper on MRI of the knee was the only one on the musculoskeletal system presented a the 1st meeting of the Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine in 1982. Professor Worthington has also been involved in valuable studies in obstetrics and gynaecology which include physiological and pathological studies in pregnancy, and observations of ovarian and cervical cancer. His subsequent work has been both didactic and visionary and has included the clinical application of ultra-high-speed echo-planar imaging in the central nervous system and the body. He has also been actively involved in the evaluation of ultra-high-speed echo volumar imaging in the studies of functional brain imaging in order to determine the external stimuli. His fundamental clinical work in MRI won him the Gold Medal of the Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine in 1990 shortly after being elected President of the British Institute of Radiology in 1988.
