CitationDistinguished for his pioneering work on the interaction of intense light with atoms, and on the nonclassical properties of light. He was the first to predict the existence of ultrahigh harmonic emission associated with the multiphoton excitation of atoms by super-intense laser fields. Experiments at Saclay have demonstrated such harmonics provide the highest XUV spectral brightness currently available. His work on multiphoton atomic excitation predicted the formation of stable dressed states which trap population in coherence-induced transparencies of importance in ionisation and in laser cooling. He has made contributions to the theory of atomic transitions induced by nonclassical light. His work on quantum jumps in three-level transitions led to new insights into the importance of coherence in fluorescence relevant to trapped ion frequency standards. He has made a number of advances in understanding of the interaction of atoms with radiation in high Q cavities in cavity quantum electrodynamics, from his pioneering work with Milonni on modified spontaneous emission in optical cavities, in his work on decay and revival of coherences and the production of macroscopic superpositions of field states in micromaser cavities. Finally he has made innovative studies of optical correlations in broad-band squeezed light, and the dynamics of transitions induced by squeezed light.
