Citation | Gilbert Stork is one of the most seminal and influential innovators of modern synthetic organic chemistry. He combines originality and ingenuity with a deep theoretical understanding. He has established novel procedures which have been incorporated internationally into the organic chemists repertoire. His influencer has been all-pervasive. He was a pioneer in the appliction of stereo chemical principles to attain fully stereoselsctive syntheses as evinced by his early synthesis of cantharidrine. Among the entirely new procerdures he has introduced are specific and controllable radical cylisation, selective enolate production and usage, organisilicon chemistry and particularly the development and wide-ranging utility of enamines. ALl these processes have been adopted worldwide with avidity. He himself has applied them fruitfully in the synthesis of a wide range of complex natural products, usually of bilogicl significance. They comprise an impressivbe spectrum including alkaloids (yohimbine, aspidospermine, lycopodine, conessine, histrionicotoxin), steroids (calcitriol, cortical hormones, polyene cyclisations) terpenes (cedrine, lupeol, dehydroabietic acid), mould metabolites (griseofulvin, byssochlamic acid, cytochalasin, cephalosporins) prostaglandins and macrocycles (muscone, erythronolide). The examples indicated are not exhaustive! These accomplishments have earned him over twenty international awards and prizes. In 1983 he was awarded the National Medal of Science by the president. He has been elected to the US National Academy of Sciences (1961) and toi the French Academie des Sciences (1989). His research has been truly creative and inspiring revealing hitherto unexplored and stimulating new vistas. he is regarded with genuine respect and affection by a generation of organic chemists worldwide. |
