Citation | Professor Ron Ekers is distinguished for his innovative research in imaging the radio emission of extragalactic radio sources. He has identified their optical counterparts and established the radio galaxy luminosity function as well as making incisive studies of variability, polarization and neutral hydrogen content of radio galaxies and quasars. He has also made key radio observations of planets, the Galactic centre, gamma-ray bursts and the Cosmic Microwave Background. Ron Ekers has had a wide influence in astronomy through his crucial contributions to the design and development of the major radio array telescopes in the Netherlands, the USA and Australia in addition to effective leadership of the associated research teams. His world-wide reputation as a leader in his field has been recognized by his recent election as President of International Astronomical Union. |
