| Citation | Wright has made advances in the molecular physiology of membrane transporters. He invented expression cloning, which led to the cloning of many transporters; was the first to identify mutations in a transporter (the sodium/glucose co-transporter SGLT1) and determine how these mutations cause glucose galactose malabsorption. He was the first to reveal "gating currents" in a transporter and this helped explain how transporters convert the energy stored in ion gradients into osmotic work. He produced functional recombinant human membrane protein (SGLT1) for structural studies and co-invented a novel electron microscopic method to determine oligomeric and low-resolution structures of functional membrane proteins. |
