He has made wide ranging contributions to the theory of fusion plasmas, essential for the development of fusion power. These include the concept of the bootstrap current, an essential ingredient of a steady-state fusion power plant; application of invariance principles to the confinement properties of fusion devices, permitting extrapolations of present experimental performance to the burning plasma device ITER; the development of the 'ballooning transformation' for calculating stability of toroidal devices, relevant to anomalous transport and pressure limits; and calculating stability of edge localised modes, whose impact on plasma exhaust is a major concern for ITER.
