CitationHugh Durrant-Whyte is distinguished for his major contributions to robotics, in particular to the fields of sensor data fusion and of autonomous vehicle navigation. His visionary work in developing nonlinear filtering techniques for robot control has led to modern Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM), arguably the most important development in mobile robotics. He has pioneered decentralized data fusion which has led, inter alia, to the world s first demonstration of a cooperative, multi-platform fleet of unmanned aircraft for search and surveillance.
