Alan Smith has made major discoveries including: identification of the initiator codon AUG and its recognition by methionyl tRNA in eukaryotes; the genome organization of SV40, including splicing in SV40 RNA; determination of the first amino acid sequence of a nuclear localisation sequence, that of SV40 T antigen; and the characterisation of CFTR protein, together with aspects of the molecular mechanism of Cystic Fibrosis. In industry, he has also been Chief Scientific Officer of Genzyme, one of the world's top biotechnology companies, where he has played a major role in the development of new drugs.
